PLC Newbie

A retired engineer.
I have been asked to work on a Food packaging machine that is PLC controlled (my first)
I am very upset that Mitsubishi want $295.00 AU for GXWorks2 before I can begin to
educate myself on this system of control and be able to sort this machine out.
I believe software to run their products should be free.
